Ram Air/Hood Scoop

Ram Air Via Hood Scoop

Power Gain : 7hp

DESCRIPTION :

This is a cool mod. I ordered a Hood Scoop for $12 from JC Whitney. The scoop is hard plastic. When you install a performance intake (K&N or whatever), the intake sucks in more air, making more power. The only problem is that this air is hot, having being heated by the engine, and therefor produces less power than cold air would, and sometimes even hampers performance. The density of cold air makes an extra 5 horsepower or so from a normal hot-air intake. The ram-air forces the air into the engine, for another 2 or so, thus making about 7hp. This mod is more difficult to do.

INSTALLATION :

Get the scoop, and a Dremmel Tool. It's a little hand held drill-type machine. Buy some cutting blades for it. Using some chalk, or something, mark the bottom of the scoop at the BASE, not the edges, and put it on the hood. Pull it off, and you should now have a square outline the size of the scoop on your hood. Remove the insulation under the hood in the area you are going to be cutting in. Use the dremmel to cut through the hood's metal, and the metal supports under it. Support the hood for easy access, and slide the scoop from under the hole, so that the scoop part sticks out of the hood, and so that the lip of the scoop is being stopped by the hood. (see my drawing below)

There will be a little gap usually. Use something to fill it in, and to apply to the bottom of the scoop to get the scoop securely attached to the hood. I used JB Weld to attach the scoop to the hood, and I used BOND-O to smooth out the gap between hood/scoop. Then it's paint time. I got my car recently painted at MAACO, and the color is Gloss-Black, so I bought a can of gloss-black engine paint and it matched up.
