Intake Mod

Removing Air Silencer

Power Gain : 1hp

Sorry, No Pic

DESCRIPTION :

This is a minor mod, courtesy of Jason Dawson of Michigan in his 98 Duratec Taurus. This removes some restriction and makes the engine a little louder.

INSTALLATION :

1. Remove the left front wheel
2. Remove the front inner splash guard
3. There is a bolt attatching the piping where it exits the engine compartment and also one supporting the air 'muffler' (this one is found by feel and is kind of a pain to remove)
4. The piping connects to the air box with pressure, just pop it off and then twist and pull on the unit as a whole till it finally works its way free. If I remember right, it is a one piece unit and is easier to remove before cutting.
5. There is a bracket for the retaining screw that holds the pipe where it exits into the fender area, cut it about 1-2 inches past this. Unless you aren't going to cover the opening, then you can cut it where ever. The bracket STAYS. It is attatched and will hold the pipe in place.
6. I covered mine with a piece of window screen. Nylon type is preferred as it is more flexable. I used a zip tie to hold it in place and trimmed the extra screen.
7. With the piece being shorter, it is much easier to put back and attach to the air box.
8. Replace the inner splash shield and tire.
This took me about 45 minutes to do. Now that I know what I am doing, I bet I could do it in under 1/2 hour. This can be done by just removing the whole piping unit from the air box and end there. But then you will draw warm(hot) air from the engine compartment. Cool air burns better, that is why I think the intake being left to draw outside the engine area is best. And from the engine compartment it looks like noting was done. With the air silencer removed, there is alot of room left in the fender for a possible 'ram air' piping system if you so desire. But in my opinion, this is wasted time as ram air only works at higher speeds. But to each his/her own. My wife noticed the increase in low end kick right away, and she isn't the racer type like me. I normally drive a 4x4 F-150, so I thought it had kick before the mod.
No noticed difference in the noise or gas mileage.
