Advanced Timing

Advanced Timing

Power Gain : 10hp

DESCRIPTION :

This is the mother of all mods! IT WILL NOT WORK IF YOU HAVE A PERFORMANCE COMPUTER CHIP! It is very easy, quick, and VERY productive! The timing dictates when the spark is sent into the engine to make the cylender fire. The stock setting on the Taurus is around 8 degrees. By advancing the timing a few degrees, it speeds up the spark/firing order, making the car a LOT more powerful. I almost crapped my pants when I first got in and blasted away with this badboy! It is GREAT! The only drawback is that you have to run higher octane gas to prevent detonation. Detonation is when the mixture detonates IN the cylender. It makes a pinging/popping/ grinding noise. It is bad. The higher octane keeps the gas/air mix from blowing until it is supposed to. It also gives better gas mileage, which equals out what the timing mod takes away.

INSTALLATION :

Ok. This is easier than it sounds. First, fill up the tank with supreme gasoline. Then buy/rent a Timing Light. Hook it up the way the instructions say. Find the marks that mark the timing. They are little slashes with numbers after them. They are located on the bottom-most pulley in the engine. I had to jack up the front of my car and get under it to find the marks. If you look, and look, and look, but can't find them, have someone get in, and tap the engine (turn the key a little to make the engine turn, but NOT turn on), until you can see the marks. Use a piece of chalk and mark the 12 degree area. This is where you want to advance the timing to. Using a ratchet/socket loosen the bolt that holds the distributor cap in place. It is under the cap+rotor. Once loosened, turn the car on, and use the timing light to see where the timing is. SLOWLY, turn the distributor cap clockwise until the timing mark lines up with the 12 degrees mark you made earlier. Once done, carefully tighten the bolt under the distributor so it doesn't jiggle back. Then turn the car off. Wait a minute or so, and turn it back on. Make sure the car will start. If you advance it too much, the car will have trouble starting. If so, retard it back a degree or so. Keep adjusting it until you can drive REAL hard (up a steep hill at full throttle), without any detonation being heard.
